Flat Classroom Project: "In Our Neck of the Woods"
My flat classroom project will be an international online weather station called, “In Our Neck of the Woods.” It will be a website where teachers can film and upload videos of their students doing weather reports from their school, as well as communicate with other students from all over. There will be a tab for video reports to be published from various schools. Each video will have a place for people to ask questions or give comments on that particular weather video. There will be a Q and A tab for students and teachers to post questions and receive feedback from sources all over the country and possibly the world. There will also be a “Tell Us About…” tab, which serves as a journal log for students and teachers to discuss answers to various prompt questions created by those who visit the site. For example, someone could post, “Tell us about the biggest thunderstorm you ever witnessed.” Postings on this site will have to be approved by the creator of the site before publishing and no personal information will be displayed on the site, just the state (possibly the town) where the school is located. Also, users will post their entries with their first name only, for protection and safety rules.
The reason for creating this flat classroom project is to give students from different parts of the country/world the opportunity to see what the weather is like in places outside of their own school. Even though it is sunny in California, it’s raining in Texas. It will help students gain a better perspective on the world and remember how things differ across states/countries. For example, a student in Florida could post a question about snow on the Q and A portion or on a snow weather report video and receive feedback from various students who have different experiences and information to share about snow. It will also give students the opportunity to communicate with other students outside of their school and discuss something they all can relate to. It would be wonderful if Al Roker could promote the site and work with the students, bringing information onto the sites, posting his own videos, or even participating in the Q and A part of the site.
